I have been experiencing a fuel smell throught the A/C vents on my '95 960 especially strong after fill up. Prior to my last trip to the fill station, I removed the trunk liner near to the filler to see if I could see a problem with the return fuel line. The odor in the trunk did not seem to appear until the tank was full and no liquid gas could be seen. However, when I left the filling station, the fuel smeel was very strong with the A/C on and when the A/C was turned off, the smell seemed to be coming from the outside. After a few miles the smell subsided and I looked under the hood for liquid fuel but found nothing. Even between fill-ups, the fuel smell comes through the vents when the A/C is set to use fresh air and at a stand still. I have replaced the fuel rail as I thought this was the problem.

Is it possible that the smwll may be coming from the rubber fuel lines under the hood or maybe the vacuum controlled valve near the fuel rail (What is this valve for?). My thought is this, the fuel, liquid or gas, backs up during filling up to the engine compartment and is leaking out and when the A/C is turned on you get a good dose of fuel.

Has anyone experienced a fuel leak under the hood beside the fuel rail? Is it worth while to just replace all the rubber fuel lines as precaution/fix?
