My car eats fuel relays? 240 89 sedan 200 1989

So...my car stopped running a few weeks ago and it turned out to be a bad fuel relay and in tank fuel pump. Both were replaced with used known to be good parts so that I could make it home. Since then, things have been off. I had a "flying stall" with Check engine light but the car didn't throw any codes. I tracked down a vaccum leak and fixed that, then my fuel relay was HOT HOT so I pulled that off and sure enough it had kicked the bucket so I replaced that, and the check valve was bad so I replaced that. For a couple of days and 40 miles or so it was running fairly well again though not in tip top, and now today around town it was really rough and when I felt the fuel pump relay it was really warm after only 10 miles of driving. There is also a bad smell coming from the middle of the car that I notice when I get out it smells like hot brakes or hot metal, when I feel up in the wheel wells though it's not the brakes...the car has been idleing rough too.
My questions are these...what has killed 3 fuel relays in 1 month, is the hot smell related - or better yet, what is it - and do you think it could be just my main pump failing after the extra stress of the blown in tank one?
