Rear Wheel Bearing failure 700

Hi,

I just had a rear wheel bearing self-distruct on my 88 760 Wagon, which is getting close to 450,000 kms. It had been letting me know for a couple of weeks, but I thought it was just the parking brake shoes inside the hub that were making the noise. The roller bearing had come completely apart and the inner and outer seals had self-distructed.

I have managed to get everything out and cleaned the inner axle around the bearing area. The only question is how do I remove the inner bearing race which is still inside the axle? Do I need a puller to get it out?

I removed the driveshaft on the other side as I want to replace the bearing on that side as well. Everything looked in good shape on that side, but when I pulled the shaft out I noticed a lot of rusty, looking crud inside the axle. Is it possible to flush out the axle tubes somehow? I am also worried about the side where the bearing self-destructed as I can see steel filings on the driveshaft and inside the tube.

I am planning to change the oil in the differential, but am wondering if there is some way to flush the differential before putting new oil back in.

Thanks,
Richard
