Aftermarket stereo problems 200 1990

I've got a Blaupunkt mounted in the high positionin my '90 240. It started having problems last winter with its LED display flickering, then dying. Now, it's controls have gone all screwy, and I think it's time to get rid of it altogether.

At any rate, the problem is quite definitely connected to the fact that it is above the heater vents. Last winter when the troubles started, I could solve them by turning the heat off. Then, over the spring and summer, nothing changed, but then, as soon as I started turning the heat back on, it got worse.

So, I wonder if anyone else has had this sort of problem. I don't want to get a new stereo and have it die in a year, either. I could mount it in the low position, but I don't want it behind the shifter, where loading CDs would be difficult.
