I am trying to track down a shimmy in my front end and was looking at the steering gear as a possible suspect. I took the boot off the drivers side and twisted the steering column back and forth, and I could feel and hear a little clunk from the rack. When I moved the rack where it comes out of the housing, I could move it up and down in the housing. Is there a way to adjust the play in the rack? According to the Volvo service manual I have a Camgear late model steering gear with locking plug for pre-=tensioning piston. Can I get out of this without a new steering gear?
