O2 Sensor Mystery 700 1988

Recently acquired a '88 745 turbo intercooler. Was changing the oil and noticed that the O2 sensor bung merely had a bolt in it. Is there a reason anyone would do this other than the bolt being cheaper than a sensor? Also, where does the wiring from the O2 sensor go? I don't see any associated wiring and would like to know where to start looking. Gotta get a manual for this thing... Thanks, brickers.
