96 960 cracked valve cover 900 1996

Update: The mechanic has said that he can't get the JBWeld to adhere to the outer surfaces of the valve cover, that it just flakes off when it dries.

Is my memory, from earlier replies, that the outer surfaces should be abraded (and not gently) to give the epoxy something to hold on to? How would 60 grit paper work? If that's what works, I'll call him on Monday and ask him to try it...assuming that Hurricane Wilma hasn't blown his shop down.
