Data from recent 4000-mi trip in 940 900 1994

Just got back tonight after two weeks with another 4009mi added for a total of 169017 on the clock. The trip was from western Canada to visit my daughter in the SF Bay Area, on to friends near Santa Barbara, then back North through Vancouver BC, to Calgary. Highway-only (7) fillups covered 3017mi and returned an average of 29.2MPG(US). Longest fillup leg was 540 mi from Medford, OR to Bellingham, WA on I-5, and got 28.9MPG, but included the 'usual' 1-hr crawl through Portland in a mid-day jam...heaven knows what these folks do in rush hour!

For some reason it began pinging a fair bit under load, even after two bottles of "Techron". I had to use 89-Octane to get pinging down to my comfort level. Other beefs are the engine noise at highway speeds, and the seats. Maybe it's just my aging joints, but I get stiffer than in the 240.

Oil consumption looks like a bit over 1/2 litre (Mobil-1, 5W30). The car ran without a hitch, but as with most of us non-turbo owners, there were plenty of times I was wishing for more torque. It couldn't hold speed in 4th/OD through many of the mountain passes in the Cdn Rockies. (Maybe I got spoiled by driving a friend's BMW 'M' roadster around Vancouver...that's REAL power. On the other hand, his investment is about 10X what I've got in the 940....)
