What's this thermal switch doing here? 200 1990

I just noticed on the passenger side upper corner of my radiator, there is what looks very much like a thermal switch protruding from the back (engine side) of my radiator. It has two contacts which are disconnected. Is it, in fact, a thermal switch, or is it a sensor? If it is a switch, what are its on and off temperatures? What's it supposed to be connected to?
