I FAILED MY INSPECTION! Never happened before! Even when all of the front lights of my '72 MGB started flashing when I turned on the turn signals, a caft knife and a little duct tape saw me through. But my dear '90 240DL Wagon failed because its parking brake wouldn't hold the car in place at 1200 RPM in first gear (I'm still trying to decide how reasonable an assumption this is in a car with a clutch).
Anyway, I've adjusted the parking brake with the bolt under the center console so that it holds the car on a reasonably steep hill at 8 clicks of the handle. Still, it doesn't hold or stop the car in first gear at 1200 RPM. Also, with it so adjusted, I can't get more than about 9 clicks before the handle is at the end of its travel.
I note from the diagram in Bentley that there are star wheel adjusters in the back, but I haven't seen any reference to actually using them to adjust the brakes. Is there a reason for that?
If I do have to replace the shoes, can rear calipers be unbolted and moved out of the way without disconnecting the hydraulic lines? I've never owned a car on which this was not possible, as long as you are careful not to hang the calipers from the hoses, but the procedure I have dictates that the calipers be completely removed, and I really don't want to have to bleed the brakes.
