brake lights 900 1993

this is strange,put in new tail lights,( the whole unit, lens all cracked) now when I step on the brakes the bad bulb light on the dash goes on, ok check tail lights.
when you step on the brake,the running light goes out on drivers side and the brake light does not come on.
so I put in a new bulb no difference.
bad ground some where any one have this problem?
