tried to do away with my backing plate; had front wheel bearing go 200 1989

Dear Brickboard,

My 1990 Volvo 240 DL is getting tired and rusty. The last time I changed my front brakes, the backing plate and the protector plate crumbled in my hands. (The backing plate is about the size of a Frisbee. The protector plate attaches to the backing plate and is smaller with a cone shape extending inside the wheel to protect the inside bearings. Both are located behind the wheel.)

So I decided to make sure the inside bearing seals were in good shape and go without the crumbled parts.

Well, maybe I was wrong to do so as I just replace a rusty inner wheel bearing today.

The Volvo shop wants $36 each for the backing plate and $40 each for the protector plates. $164 seemed like more than my car was worth.

So I ordered the backing plates only from Groton for $30 each. $65 or so is bearable.

Do any of you have some experience with this problem? Did I do the right thing? Please advise.
