1972 142 E Gas tank 140-160

I am in the process of restoring a 1972 142 E Volvo. Gas has been sitting in the tank for several years and turned to gunk. The tank was chemical with acetone. I put 5 gallons of gas in the tank and prime a new pump. The pump deliver about 60 psi, but lot of air in being pump through the line. Where is the air is coming from?. By deduction, the only place air could be coming the line is from the pick-up tube in the tank. So, can the pick-up tube be replace. Also, is there an alterative for the filter screen on the end of the pick-up tube?. Can a filter screen be placed outside the tank?.

Thanks
