I am attempting to replace the gearstick knob on my 88 745 GLE, which has an M46 gearbox. It appears the plastic housing which the overdrive spade connectors are held by needs to be removed as it seems to be inserted from the TOP of the knob. This means either cutting the wires at the spade connectors, which I don't want to do, or disconnecting the wires under the car (above the gearbox) and fishing the wires through the gearlever. Has anyone done this and, if so, can you walk me through the procedure? It seems simple at first, but I don't want to damage the overdrive wiring or cut it if I don't have to. I've already spent over an hour on what should be a simple job. TIA.
