Dumb EFI self-diagnosis question 200

After getting some conflicting advice, I've decided to see what codes my '93 240 is blinking, for myself... Questions: Does the car need to be running when I retrieve the codes or just in the ignition on position. The car runs great, but the light is starting to get to me ! Thanks for your help... BTW, I have a Haynes book as a guide, but it doesn't answer my question....
