What are the signs of a failing differential? 200

Lately, when I'm accelerating from a stop, before the car starts moving, I get a momentary grinding/thudding from the rear end like something is turning but not catching the wheels properly. Then it catches and the car starts moving. If I accelerate hard it's worse (violent and loud), gently usually none.

I don't think it is the clutch as the noise is definitely from the rear. Not likely a seized caliper as car rolls when brakes let up.

So, is this a symptom of a differential problem? What to look for? Fixable?
