Overheating/Heat blowing all the time....problems related? 200

It was a rough summer. 240 overheated in stop and go traffic. Turning the heat on would cool it back down. Replaced thermostat (which was broken), flushed radiator, still overheated. Fan clutch seemed to be ok. I didn't "hose out" the exterior of the radiator which some people have said can work. Summer ended (finally) and being poor i figured i'll just take another look at it again next june when weather gets hot again.

Also towards the end of summer I started to notice hot air coming out of the vents all the time. previously, even with the blower turned all the way to the "off" position i would still get air coming through, and it would either be all hot or all cold. No mixture. It was like this for the past few years. Now I notice its all very hot air, all the time, even with temp slider all the way in the blue.

checked the forums here, possibly the heater valve? I saw the thread with the pictures on how to replace it, I may take a stab at it but there are still some holes in those instructions...Also I don't really understand how the thing works, if there's coolant running through it how does it have anything to do with the air being pushed into the cabin? sorry....

My other question is, is there anyway these two problems are related. If the hot air problem is from a bad heater valve, is there any way that could be causing overheating? Or vice versa?
Thanks in advance
