Stumbling / Stalling when shifted into Reverse & Forward Gears 200 1992

Hello,

We have a 1992 240DL (225,000 miles). Recently, the car stumbles and sometimes stalls when the automatic transmission is shifted out of Park and into Reverse or any of the forward drive gears. This happens at all times - warm engine or not.

The car runs fine at idle in Park and Neutral and at cruising speeds. If we use the gas pedal to increase the engine RPMs when shifting from Park, the car will not stumble or stall.

This problem showed up after driving about an hour or so at highway speeds and then stopping off for some coffee. The Check Engine light came on at that time, but has since turned itself off.

I have done the quick AMM diagnosis - the car runs better with it connected. We have removed the fuses and cleaned them as well.

Because the problem only happens when the car is put into gear, we're not sure where to look next. It seems the engine can't compensate for the extra load when the transmission is engaged. I'm leaning torwards a fuel delivery problem (i.e. one of the pumps). Any ideas / suggestions?
