Problems Starting 200

The old '87 240dl sedan is having troubles starting.
I have put a new starter on at the end of August, so I have no problem turning it over. It just won't "fire". I replaced the fuel pump relay, and the problem still remains. Sometimes I'll get lucky and it'll go, but most often when I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere, it decides not to go.
Any ideas of what to look for or do would be great.
