Replacing Battery Cables. 200 1980

Replaced my battery last night, as I've replaced just about everything else (short of the alternator, which is working fine) trying to chase down some strange electrical problems my '80 245 DL has been having for a while.

When removing the leads from the old battery, I saw what has probably been causing the problems all along.

The wires are absolutely shot. It's rather scary, actually.

Anyhow, I need some info on swapping cables.

As far as I can tell, the positive cable bolts on, but it's hard to see while looking down from above. Does anyone have any tips on getting to this bolt?

What does the little jumper from the positive terminal to the little box attached to the fender do? Is there a "good" way of getting this little jumper to work with a generic battery cable from an auto parts store?

Any other basic battery tips would be appreciated as well, as it's been a while since I've done any kind of work on the electrical system.

Pictures will come soon to help clarify what I'm talking about (and to show just how bad the wiring really is.

Thanks as always.
