can intermediate shaft endplay be corrected with out disassembly? 200 1984

Hello, I wanted to see if antone had any experience with intermendiate shaft endplay. With my timing belt off, I can grab the pully and see a good amount of play, a couple of mm or more. Is this normal? One of my repair manuals makes mention of a thrust plate that could be replaced that could reduce endplay, but there is no picture or detailed description. Where could I get one to experiment with? Thanks for your input, Kenneth
