Rear camshaft cover washer

Last week I experienced the 'gushing engine oil' syndrome mentioned here some time ago. Like most folks, I suspected the worst at first -- as in headgasket. However, by sticking my hand between the rear of the head and the firewall, I could feel the camshaft turning. Not natural says I!!

I'll clean the flame arrestor which probably caused the necessary pressure buildup. To replace the cover washer, am I naive to think that it can be pressed in by prying against the firewall? The fit has been described as 'snug' on this site. How tight is snug?

Am I correct in assuming that the convex side ends up on the inside?

Thanks
