Hello Bricksters,
About a year ago with 170K on the clock, the head gasket blew on my 92 960. Because there was no way I was able to afford fixing it and it was far too complex for my meager skills, I gave the car to my friend Rich, the master mechanic in exchange for some time helping me with my 240's.
Well, about a year went by before Rich decided to tackle the head gasket and in the interim, the block cracked just below the exhaust manifold. I haven't seen it but he claims it is repairable and on Friday he has a master welder coming over to hopefully weld up the crack. Rich doesn't have internet service so I am his go-between for answers.
Two questions have arisen. First has anyone had any experience with this, so I can relay any important info on to him. Second, the welder wants to know exactly what the block composition is, so he will be prepared to use the proper welding rods. He believes (but is not sure) that the block is 53 Series Aluminum Alloy.
I hope that this makes sense to someone who may be able to provide some answers. Thanks very much in advance for sharing your knowlege.
Marty Wolfson
