Driver side Mirror falling off 700 1990

The outside driver side mirror on my 1990 740 turbo is beginning to fall off. I can "press" it back into position and it stays stable for a day, and then it begins to fall (about 1/8 inch) on one side. It is just the glass that seems to be peeling away from the metal mechanism behind it. What is holding the mirror to the metal? Is it double sided tape or some sort of glue? What should be done to secure the mirror so it doesn't fall and break into pieces?
