240 strut removal 200 1989

I am replacing the control arm bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends and strut inserts on the front of my 240, and am wondering if it is possible to get the strut free (enough) of the wheel well to facilitate this without having to disconnect the brake lines. They are corroded and I would prefer not having to worry about breaking them.(I have spent enough money already)
Also, the struts are currently not equally positioned in the shock towers. Should they be in the same position relative to each other in the adjustment slots, or does it matter.
I would think that this condition would create a different toe-in angle from side to side.
Thank you for any help you can give.
