745 Volvo ENGINE replacement 700

I have a chance to get a 91 Volvo 745 with new tires in good shape but it needs a new engine. Has anybody had a chance to replace engines before and can tell if this is a good idea? What is the engine type for this vehicle and what year model is compadiable? What is a fair price for a machanic put a used engine in?

I can get this car for the price of the tires alone. Thanks! Jerry
