fuel pump 700 1990

a bit paranoid these days about the sound of my fuel pump. it's no longer got that smooth/constant hiss anymore, rather a broken, spit n sputter sound about it. have a 2500km road trip in a couple of weeks, and as cold as it is here i'd prefer not to be left on the highway. the car isn't running any differently than normal. could it be on the way out?
