86 740 turbo not charging

Hi All,
I have an 86 740 turbo wagon with 200k miles. I lent the car to a
friend and now it wont start without a jump. When i remove the cables the engine stumbles and stalls. The alternator is new. She mentioned the car
did get stuck in the snow bank and took her 10 min to rock it out.
One of the mechanics at works thinks a ground strap might
have broken loose. Any Ideas would be appreciated.
