I'm looking at an 83 sedan with a five speed transmission.
The transmission makes a very loud clattering sound which seems to come from the bell housing. The sound is there at idle, and in first, second and fourth gears, but not in third.
It goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed. The clutch feels solid.
At idle, the clattering is a little irregular - sometimes something seems to catch inside the transmission, then the clattering is much louder. Again, if you use the clutch pedal the noise goes away.
I would think it's something to do with the flywheel or throwout bearing except for the fact that the sound goes away in third gear.
Has anyone run into anything like this?
The rest of the car overall doesn't show very careful maintenence.
Thanks for any thoughts on this.
