chugging/choking off the line 120-130

Hey Y'all,

In a previous post I needed help with fixing the seal on the tubing running from under the float-bowl to the carb. I got that fixed just fine with a little bit of fuel-line home-made seal, and so now I am trying to get the engine running better now that it is running again.

It is running and idiling fairly well when parked, but in test-driving it seems to chug or kind of choke a little bit when starting to accelerate from a dead stop off the line. This car is new to me, so I have as yet had time to become accustomed to all it's quirks. It is however an automatic tranny, so I'm wondering how much that might factor in to the off-the-line acceleration thing. The engine seems close to dying (thus the chug/starving sound) when I first press the gas pedal from stop.

Since I had to take one carb off in order to fix the float-bowl line problem, I'm now worried that I disturbed the original settings of the carbs also. I'm not sure I re-attached the choke cable correctly as it was originally calibrated. The only thing I've done so far in trying to fix this is to check and fill the dash-pot cylinders with ATF fluid to make sure that those were suctioning and reacting correctly. It's got the original coil on it, and I haven't checked the point-gap yet, so I don't quite know the state of the ignition system... Oh, and it seems that it's lacking some in top-end power, but I don't know how much the "feel" of this rig's power is related to the characteristics of the auto-tranny.

I'm now looking for the next things to check in regards to the initial acceleration problem. Anybody have ideas for me out there? We're having pretty cold weather here now in the NW, so I'm thinking perhaps I should look into adjusting the choke and idle speed accordingly? I'm kind of afraid of touching the carb adjustments, as I'm rather a novice with tunning and knowing about them.
