Strange bearing-ish noise all of a sudden 200

All of a sudden I have this noise that sounds like a front wheel bearing gone south, kinda of a cross between a bad tired and a stone jammed in a steel backing plate. Its not really sensitive to side to side motion. I thought it might be something in the rear end - but its not. Definitly speed sensative - sounds like the front. Do these cars eat up front wheel bearings ?
