easy ways to tell a bad turbo? 200 1983

hey guys, i'm looking at an '83 turbo 245 without intercooler that i've found for dirt cheap. they hit a deer, sooo new fender and corner light and i should be good to go...anyways.... i haven't messed with turbos at all yet and want to know if it is good before i drag it home. I went and looked at it once and it started up just fine. There was no smoke at all so i think the seals are ok...there was no abnormal noise (except from the fuel pump i'll have to replace).. i was not able to drive the car because 2 of the tires are flat at the moment and the owner doesnt have a compresser on hand.. are there any simple tests i can do to ensure the workings of the turbo and make sure i'm not getting into a huge money trap with the turbo? Thanks guys! also, if anyone knows where i may pick up an intercooler setup that would be awesome....would an intercooler off of a 740 turbo work? there is one of those in a boneyard close by...just no 240 turbos.
