Temprature gauge 200 1990

I have a 1990 240 DL with 199K on it .The temprature gauge which I think tells the coolant temprature behaves erraticly . It sometimes stays below the red dot and sometimes above and many times even with it, even after driving for long time . I have changed coolant which is slightly ( 50/50). The Themostat is new . Where is the temprature sensor on the engine block . Can it be loose .There is no electrical fan only mechanical one .I will appreciate any help
