Hello, first post to the brickboard, but have found gobs of helpful info here to help me suss out problems. I have a '79 242 DL, no rust, straight body, 121K, automatic. Car runs unbelievable, but once every 1k miles of travel, my main fuel pump starts making a noise like it is sucking air, and the car will stumble under acceleration or cruising. I will start to get annoyed, and get my work clothes on, and the problem will start again. The car has 100% new and functional ignition system, less any internal distibutor parts (new rotor though), new fuel filter, new air filter, new vac hoses, new timing belt, and the main fuel pump appears shiny any new (I didn't replace it, says Bosch on it though). So in the interest of not getting stuck anywhere between Maine and Connecticut, which we travel frequently, anyone have any good troubleshooting ideas on this, fuses don't get hot, but maybe a funky ground or pump relay is my main suspect. Pump makes no weird noises normally, except when the car stumbles under accel, if I let the car idle, it idles a tad rough. The problem usually dissapears after about 150-200 miles, and the comes back every 1k or so. Any help/similar problems would be much appreciated! I am about ready to buy a new bosch to take with me this weekend if I can't figure it out...225$ ouch!
