Hi I have a 1985 240 GL Automatic and I'm having problems with the overdrive. Well actually I've had the car for aboot six months and the overdrive has never worked. I went to a junk yard and got a new OD solenoid and relay, and when I went to change the solenoid, I realized that the wire going to it had got disconnected right below the gearshift. I reattached it and the OD still didnt work. I changed the relay and the solenoid. My testlight says the solenoid has power now.
the new relay, which came out of an 81 240 is a different color and part number works and is sending power, but it doesnt make the light in the dash turn on and off for the OD. I was going about 85mph in third gear and all of a sudden the OD came on and worked fine. I pushed the button and it turned off just fine, pushed it again and nothing happened.
Now I can get the OD to come on if I reach about 75mph and it will stay on until i decelerate below about 55-60mph but then wont come on again till 75. Is there a sensor that tell the solenoid to kick on a a certain speed? Is it because I have the wrong relay? I am at a loss as to what I can do to get my OD to come on when its supposed to. If anyone has any idea how I can rectify my problem PLEASE let me know. Thanks
