Fuel pump noise... 200

Hi everyone,
My 85 240DL wagon is making a whinning metalic noise coming from the fuel pump location..This just started a few days ago and i have never heard it this loud before..I'v been told that if the filter gets plugged or there is a restriction somehwere that can make the fuel pump sound like it's going bad..And then again it might be a bad fuel pump...The car runs good even thou the noise is there..It has a steady pitch at idle then increases in pitch just a little if you step on the gas...What to you guys think..Anyone who has had this experience please respond and enlighten me to what my course of action should be..Sure would appreciate it!!!
