Starting Problems.....Really pissing me off 200 1990

Hi there everyone. I have a 90 240DL and for the couple months its been giving me a problem where when you start the car it'll crank over instanly do a lil rev and then die. It'll run and stay running if you put the car in gear or start driving before it dies and be fine and run forever. What can be the problem. It also gets horrible gas mileage i think related or not im not sure.
