Increasing amperage rating for a fuse? 200 1983

My son's 1983 GL has a problem. Some vandals broke his rear window. We replaced it. Apparently the new defroster draws a lot more current than the old one; if he uses it, it blows the fuse. Unfortunately, the affected fuse is also the fuse for the electronic overdrive; so, no overdrive. Would it be safe to try a higher-rated fuse? Or is there some way to safely put an additional resistor of some kind in the circuit for the window?
