Poly bushing fitting? 700 1987

Hi All,
I replaced my control arm bushing on the 87 740 with polyurethane. The bushings in the kit were too big and would not go into the through hole in the control arm. Since I really needed the car today, I cut down the inside of each bushing so i could reassemble. Is this typical? I had to chisel the old one out and spent most of my time cleanining junk from the control arm. The car seems to steer fine and no more groan when rolling slow and applying brakes gently. Do you usually have to fit poly bushings?
Thanks,
Palmer
