Weird Electrical Problem 700 1988

Help..... Here's one my local mechanic has just been scratching his head over:
I have a 1988 740 GLE with 190k miles. The symptoms: above 2000 rpms, the dash idiot lights come on just as if there were an alternator problem. Below 1000 rpm the lights come on very very dim. Between 1000 and 2000 rpms they stay off.

The alternator show that the battery is being charged, and I kust put a new battery in it....any ideas???
