noisy compressor

My 1990 740 gle has a noisy compressor that is only 2 years old when it is NOT engaged. Are there any simple fixes? Any and all suggestions will be appreciated! 92 240 gl 146k, 87 240 156k, 90 740 gle 16valve 155k, 04 xc90 21k.
