Oil light stays on 1986 740 700 1986

My oil light comes on and does not go out. The oil level is fine and I see that there is leakage around the valve cover. Would this cause the light to come on? Also I noticed two days ago the light would go off but now it just stays on. Please help. I tried to located the sensor but had no luck.
