I have owned Volvo 240's for 13 years, fabulous cars. I purchased a 1993 960 wagon 2 months ago, I love the car, drives like a dream, when it drives. The arrow light on the dash came on and the lights for the W,S,E selector were flashing. I ignored the lights because it kept shifting fine, 1st mistake. The lights went off and didn't come on again. I was stopped at an intersection stepped on the gas to go and felt like it was in 3rd gear, hardly moved. Pulled over and restarted, put in drive, it went fine, still no lights on dash. That scared me a bit, so I took it to a little shop that works on Volvos, mistake #2. They said that they replaced the Mode selector switch and the Gear position switch and flushed the tranny. I drove it from the shop 30 miles and the lights started to flash again, still driving fine. I called the shop, they didn't know what to tell me, I kept driving, another mistake!
About 450 miles later I was going down the road and felt a tranny shutter, next thing I know its like I'm in nuetral, going nowhere. I pulled over and turned it off and on about 15 or 20 times before it would go into drive.
I limped home, having to repeat the turning off and on about every 200 yards.
There is a noise comming from the underside of the car about where the tranny is, kinda sounds like a vacuum leak? Same noise it made when I first took it to shop.
I checked the tranny fluid and it has some, engine not running at the time.
The mechanic I took it to said that since the switches he installed didn't solve the problem then I need a new tranny????? What do you all think? I need to stop compounding my mistakes!
If I do need a tranny where to get one, what should it cost, ect.....
