Troubles holding idle speed 120-130 1968

Howdy Bboarders...

In the past couple days I've been experiencing an odd problem with maintaining a good idle speed on my Amazon (B18, Weber 32/36 w/ manual choke).

It starts up with the choke just fine. After warming up and disengaging the choke as she approaches normal operating temperature, the idle is smooth and I can drive away. The problem comes a little later when I come to a stop or disengage the clutch, letting engine settle to an idle...the idle it settles to is ultra-low to the point where it's barely running. I can rev the engine with no problem, and power delivery while I'm on the gas pedal is normal, but coming to a stop I have to either keep my foot on the gas or pull the choke out.

This first started yesterday evening after some uneventful driving around off an on during the day. Too dark to really investigate, I waited until today to take a look. I did nothing to the carb settings in the meantime, but when I first went to take a look this afternoon, the startup was fine and the idle was as if last night's events never happened. I went out to run an errand with no problem on my way to the destination. On my way back (turned off the engine while I was at the store) the car started up and idled fine at first, but at the first traffic signal where I had to slow down to a stop, it was a repeat of last night's misbehavior all over again.

When I got home, I turned it off then turned it back on again to see if that has any effect...still the ultra-slow idle. I let it cool off for about 20 minutes, in the meantime inspecting the linkage in case there was a problem with where the idle adjustment screw comes in contact with the linkage and nothing out of the ordinary there. I also double-checked the choke mechanism and nothing is sticking shut or open there, either. After 20 minutes I turned the car on for a few minutes and it was back to normal idling...that is, until I revved the engine a few times, then it would settle back to the ultra-low idle.

Any ideas?

- Dan
