Rear tailgate won't close properly 700 1989

My 745's tailgate won't close properly, it started when it was cold -20C but when it got mild it would close firmly (no movement) now it's happening all the time. I have tried lubricating it, and checked to see if the latch has moved, but everything was tightened down securely. Nothing seems to be cracked or broken.
Could the hook (body mounted)wear and cause this? Any thoughts are appreciated.
