What's with the oil drain plug on this car S90-V90 1998

Every attempt to remove the oil drain plug on this vehicle always ends up with it rounded off and unable to get it out. I've done many oil changes on other cars. I used a 6 point 17mm socket. My volvo tech told me he sees many of these stripped. What gives?. The drain plug has a strange design where the corners look rounded when new
