I'm about do a oil leak test using the glowing additive.
If I am leaking from the oil pan gasket and it needs to be changed, I'd like to know a good time estimate (i.e. if you are a good shade-tree mechanic, I'll double your estimate as I am very slow and have never done this before)
I've determined that the follwing are probably best when I am doing it:
- engine hoist to get some space
- buy an oem volvo gasket, as something tells me I never want to do this again
- if I do commit to changing it, run a Gunk oil flush (not before given the crud may be what was maintaining seals - in fact I am pretty sure given the steady increase in oil on the drive way since I switched to synthetic!)
I'm going to check the crankcase ventilation first as this could be simple.
I've got a good idea on how long/difficult it is to change rear crank gasket
(probably 6 - 8 hours at my speed + buy a tranny jack and the good seal - not the orange one, and I guess a special tool for it would be good)
It pains me to say - if the leak is a combination of rear crank seal and oil pan gasket, it might be time for me to get a new car (this is my only daily driver).
Thanks again - you folks are the best,
John
