New Tailgate Struts don't Stay up either! 900

I just bought new struts from FCP groton, installed them, it all went perfectly. The ball joints on the car side are a little worn but I don't think that causes a problem since the struts stay on. The problem is that the new struts don't keep the tailgate up much better than the old ones.

After I put them on, I had the tailgate open for a couple of hours, it stayed up, but now it won't stay up at all. Should I return the struts? Is there a trick to fix this?
