Benefits/drawbacks of self-adjustment unit on brake shoes? 444-544

Well, I dropped my front brake shoes off at the Heitman Company in Houston today. He quoted me about $22.50 per shoe on the phone, but I guess we will see what the final total is once the new pads are bonded on. We had to remove the hardware for the self-adjustment thing on the lead shoes, and that got me to wondering if there are any particular benefits or drawbacks with the self-adjusting shoes? The 544 did not have the adjustment stuff, correct? So is there any particular reason for or against it?

I'm thinking that I may just leave the self-adjustment stuff off... is this a good/bad idea?
