screaming 245

i have 87 240 wagon, b230, 5 spd man, no mods with over 300K.

while on a routine trip from suffolk va to atlanta ga, my car started screaming. well whining. it sounded like a 747 instead of a 245. the noise starts at a round 40 mph and inreases in volume and pitch as the speed increases. if i let off the gas the pitch reflects the change. clutching has a slight effect on the sound.

it's almost as if i were turning metal on a lathe.

noise is coming from the front some were. pulled my shifter cover to see if i could get a better idea as to were. no real help. it's loud

drove it home after some prayer and it stopped. no noise for 2 months now it's back.

can't find any signs of something going bad. wheel bearings are good. don't know what it could be.

car did the samething 4 yrs ago for about a week, then nothing till now.

any ideas
